Now that we’re a solid four months into the AAU season, it’s time for the report card – HighSchoolHoop’s new Top 50. Some have joined us and some have gotten the boot, some have climbed to the top and some have slipped into mediocrity. Still, as you well know by now, our rankings disregard class, which means even being on the list makes you a certified baller.
By far the biggest story of the new HSH Top 50 is St. Patrick High point guard Kyrie Irving’s ascension from No. 50 to No. 16. As outlandish as it seems, Irving has been exceptional at every tournament and camp he’s visited. Truth be told, No. 50 was a bit low to start, but there were some questions regarding Irving’s lackadaisical tendencies. Still, when you’re dropping 30 points here and dishing 12 assists there, all while taking the occasional play off, it doesn’t matter as much.
1. Harrison Barnes (2010), 6-6, 195, SF, Ames High School, IA: Barnes combines a flawless and versatile offensive repertoire with an intensity on both ends that separates him from his peers.
2. Brandon Knight (2010), 6-3, 172, PG, Pine Crest High School, FL: You’d be hard pressed to find someone faster in the 2010 class and beyond. Knight seems to make the right plays every time and has an array of breakdown moves that create easy scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates.
3. Mike Gilchrist (2011), 6-7, 190, SF, St. Patrick’s High School, NJ: A talented wing who can breakdown slower defenders on the wing and post up smaller defenders in the paint.
4. Jared Sullinger (2010), 6-7, 260, PF, Northland High School, OH: Committed to Ohio State. Sullinger is a master at using his big frame to absorb contact and finish in traffic. He’s active, has great hands and a wide array of low post moves.
5. Josh Smith (2010), 6-9, 270, C, Kentwood High School, WA: Big and strong, Smith overpowers defenders in the post and uses his wide frame to get into high percentage scoring position.
6. Jeremy Tyler (2010), 6-9, 225, PF, San Diego High School, CA: An imposing presence on both ends of the floor, Tyler may be the most skilled big man in the 2010 class.
7. Tony Wroten Jr. (2011), 6-5, 180, SG, Garfield High School, WA: Big time scorer who doubles as an underrated passer, Wroten fills up the stat sheet and plays with a confidence that translates into success.
8. Austin Rivers (2011), 6-3, 175, PG, Winter Park High School, FL: Committed to Florida. Rivers’ quickness makes defenders want to back up, but his shooting ability makes them have to guard him close. Add in wicked passing skills and Rivers is the complete package.
9. Tristan Thompson (2010), 6-8, 215, PF, Findlay Prep, NV: Committed to Texas. Thompson defines the new age big forward, slim and versatile player who reaps the benefits of running the floor. Thompson is constantly active, which allows him to excel on the offensive and defensive glass.
10. Dominique Ferguson (2010), 6-9, 210, SF, Lawrence North High School, IN: Uses his length and athleticism to outlast opponents.
11. Reggie Bullock (2010), 6-6, 180, SG, Kinston High School, NC: Combines a sweet stroke with athleticism to fill up the stat sheet.
12. C.J. Leslie (2010), 6-8, 180, PF, Word of God Academy, NC: Versatile enough to breakdown defenders on the wing and athletic enough to put them on a poster, Leslie may very well have the best high-wire act on the list.
13. James McAdoo (2011), 6-9, 205, PF, Norfolk Christian School, VA: Solid with his back to the basket, but better at finishing plays.
14. Josh Selby (2010), 6-2, 180, SG, Lake Clifton-Eastern High School, MD: Need a bucket in a hurry… Selby’s your man. Draining the trey or finishing in the lane, Selby has a knack for putting up big numbers.
15. DeShaun Thomas (2010), 6-7, 215, PF, Bishop Luers, IN: Thomas is effective with his back to the basket and can consistently knock down the 15-18 footer.
16. Kyrie Irving (2010), 6-1, 165, PG, St. Patrick High School, NJ: Quick, fast and skilled, Irving is a big time scoring point guard who also makes his teammates better with his exceptional court vision.
17. Marquis Teague (2011), 6-2, 170, PG, Pike High School, IN: Combines a quick first step with some of the best handles on the list to dominate opponents. Teague is a gifted scorer in a variety of different ways and involves teammates to balance his repertoire.
18. Roscoe Smith (2010), 6-7, 185, SF, Wallbrook High School, MD: Long and wiry, Smith is an exceptional slasher who gets off of his feet quick and finishes in the lane, while keeping the defense off balance with his solid stroke.
19. Phil Pressey (2010), 5-8, 145, PG, Episcopal School of Dallas, TX: Extremely quick guard, with a decent mid range jump shot, that makes smart plays once he’s in the lane.
20. LaQuinton Ross (2011), 6-8, 195, SG, William B. Murrah High School, MS: Don’t let the height fool you, Ross is quicker than most perimeter defenders and long enough to finish in the lane for high percentage shots, yet has the ability to consistently knock down shots from perimeter.
21. Andre Dawkins (2010), 6-4, 190, SG, Atlantic Shores Christian School, VA: Committed to Duke.
22. Dion Waters (2010), 6-2, 200, SG, Life Center Academy, NJ: Committed to Syracuse.

Someone help me understand this. One of the top 16U teams in the country is the Playas Basketball Club (they won Spring Fling, Pitt Jam Fest, Boo Williams, Bob Gibbons, and lost in the finals of the Rumble in the Bronx and the Tune Up) how is it they don’t have a top 50 player in the 2011 class? Kyle Anderson is top10 in the 2012 but no one in top 50 of 2011, someone help me.
