High School’s Best Battle at NBPA Top 100 Camp

The National Basketball Players Association Top 100 Camp is one of summer ball’s most prestigious, invite-only events for 100 of the country’s best high school players. Every summer, 25 current and former NBA players head to Virginia to work with campers, and every one who is anyone has played at the camp.

We just received recaps of Day 1 game action and news on which players have been killing it…

Lakers 85
Spurs 75

The Lakers, behind 14 points each from Harrison Barnes and Doron Lamb overcame a substantial deficit to glide by the Spurs 85-75 in the opening game of the 2009 NBPA Top 100 Camp.

The Spurs, behind 17 points from Andre Dawkins held a 30-16 lead, but the Lakers behind Lamb and Cory Joseph, who finished with 12, brought the score to within three heading into the fourth stanza. From this point the Lakers increased their lead to their eventual victory. J.T. Terrell and Evan Smotrycz pitched in with 11 each in the loss.

Rockets 86
Jazz 76

Balanced scoring keyed the win as the Rockets led by Trey Ziegler with 16 and Terrence Jones with 15, trumpeted by the Jazz 86-76. Stacy Poole led the Jazz with 19 and was assisted in the scoring column by Jelan Kendrick and Richard Solomon with 15 and 11 respectively. A pair of Michaels – Gilcrest and Cobbins – added 12 each for the
Rockets.

Hornets 81
Cavs 67

Tough defense and intense board control proved to be the key as the Hornets buzzed by the Cavs 81-67, despite 24 points from Brandon Knight. Knight was solid from the perimeter connecting on numerous threes. Joe Jackson led the Hornets with 14, while fellow Memphian Mardracus Wade was special from the perimeter connecting on 4-of-4 from deep and finishing with 13 points. Jared Sullinger was a monster on the glass grabbing 8 caroms and adding 10 markers.

Pistons 95
Celtics 76

Travis McKie and Patric Young proved to too much of an inside burden for the Celtics as they fell to the Pistons 95-76. McKie, who dropped 18, and Young, who finished with 14, were the deciding force in this relatively easy victory. Noah Cottrill added 14 for the Pistons and Will Barton pitched in with 12. Tyler Lamb was the top scorer for the
Celtics with 17. Alex Kirk added 10 in the loss.

Hawks 84
Magic 76

Team defense and some outstanding offensive board work helped lift the Hawks to an 84-76 win over the Magic.
Josh Selby was dynamic on the offensive end blowing past would be defenders for a team high 16 points. Anthony Brown and LaQuinton Ross finished with 10 each for the Hawks. Justin Coleman was the game high scorer with 23 in the loss. Tristan Thompson finished with 12 for the Magic.
