New Yorkers Heading for the Hills

Words.

If you follow high school basketball religiously, you probably have noticed that the University of West Virginia are getting commitments from prospects left and right. Since legendary head coach Bob Huggins took the reins at the Big East school in 2007, West Virginia has been pulling quality recruits from the Tri-State area, mostly New York. For the class of 2008 the Mountaineers signed McDonald’s All-American forward Devin Ebanks St. Thomas More School (CT), guard Darryl “Truck” Bryant St. Raymond’s HS (NY) and Kevin Jones Mt. Vernon (NY), all New York natives. Dan Jennings, another New York native that played for famed Oak Hill academy last season, recently pledged to the Mountaineers for the class of 2009.

With Joe Alexander now in the NBA, Ebanks should come in and start right away. Bryant will see some playing time at both guard positions and Jones should also play some meaningful minutes at the either forward position. The hills of West Virginia are vastly different from the bright lights of New York City, it makes one wonder. What is attracting all these city slickers to the mountains? And who is Huggins’ New York connect?
