Three years ago, West Coast prep powerhouse Franklin H.S. (Seattle) — notorious for their full-court pressure D — got ripped apart for 52 points by Curtis H.S. (Tacoma, Wash.) guard Isaiah Thomas in a state tournament game.
On MLK Day ’09, in the same building where Thomas now does his damage as the University of Washington’s starting point guard, Franklin won the marquee matchup at the annual King Holiday Hoopfest by, if not shutting down, at least making life extremely difficult for the next left-handed superstar guard to emerge from the Pacific Northwest: Garfield H.S. (Seattle) sophomore Tony Wroten.
In a crosstown rivalry game between the No. 1-ranked teams in Washington’s biggest classifications, the 4A Bulldogs were forced into 24 turnovers by the 3A Quakers in a 15-point loss. Wroten finished with 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting, but after he dropped a quick 10 points in the game’s first four minutes — on two three-pointers, a driving scoop shot and two free throws — the 6-foot-5 playmaker was held to only 10 points over the remaining 28 minutes, as six-foot lock-down specialist Vonchae Richardson came in off the bench and rented a room in Wroten’s shirt for the rest of the night. Franklin senior point guard Peyton Siva (Louisville) scored 15 points, while backcourt mate Chris Holmes (Eastern Washington) had a team-high 18 points.
In other King Holiday Hoopfest action:
* Dominguez (Compton, Calif.) came in as the only non-Washington team in the field and knocked off perennial powerhouse Rainier Beach in double-overtime. Playing without star forward Jordan Hamilton (Texas), who is in the middle of an eligibility dispute, Dominguez got 27 points apiece from junior guard Keala King and senior Myron Green. Vikings senior guard Aaron Dotson (LSU) scored 18 in a losing effort.
* Bellevue beat Bellarmine Prep pretty handily in what was supposed to be a showcase for UW signee Abdul Gaddy, BP’s senior point guard who is ranked in the Top-20 nationally. Gaddy put up 11 points and five assists in the loss, as his team couldn’t stop Bellevue’s outside shooters or the inside presence of Alex Schrempf, who finished with 25 points and 16 boards. Schrempf is the son of ex-NBA player Detlef Schrempf, who played his college ball at Washington.
* Class of 2010 center Joshua Smith scored 15 points — about 10 below his average — but his Kentwood H.S. squad still beat Bothell H.S. without much struggle thanks in part to Smith’s 18 rebounds and three blocks. Smith, one of the top-ranked juniors in the country, still has a long list of colleges that includes UCLA, Arizona, Duke, Georgetown and Kansas, among others.
* Defending 4A state champions Federal Way beat rival Decatur behind Michael Hale‘s 20 points.
