When news broke in late-July that Winter Park High (Fla.) star Austin Rivers was planning to visit other schools — despite committing to Florida last year — most didn’t believe Rivers, a 6-3 rising junior point guard, when he followed up the news by reaffirming his commitment to the Gators.
“Yes, I am going to take some visits just to look around out of respect for my father who wants me to see some other places,” Rivers told Rivals.com. “I am definitely still committed to Florida, but I want to see a few other schools. I don’t know which other schools I will visit yet, but I think I will visit Duke and a couple of other places, depending on what my dad wants.”
Rivers will also visit UCLA, North Carolina and Connecticut, and potentially others.
What we’re hearing is that Rivers’ father, Boston Celtics head coach Doc Rivers, felt that his son (ranked No. 8 on the HSH Top 50) committed too early and wants him to see what other schools have to offer. According to our source, Rivers’ commitment to Florida isn’t as strong as he says.
