Terrence Ross de-commits from Maryland

Terrence Ross

On New Year’s Eve, Montrose Christian (Rockville, Md.) coach Stu Vetter confirmed with the Baltimore Sun that Class of 2010 shooting guard Terrence Ross did indeed de-commit from Maryland this week.

“He has reopened his recruitment,” Vetter told the paper. “He’s going to reopen it for a limited number of schools — no more than four or five. Maryland is still very strong in the picture. He just felt that he wanted to open it up and make sure he was making an informed decision. And that’s pretty much it.”

Vetter went on to say that Kansas, Kentucky, Duke and Maryland are the schools that Ross is focusing on.

A source close to the situation tells us that Maryland “shouldn’t even be on the list, because there’s no way he’s going there at this point.”

Ross originally committed to Maryland in April.

Any word on how strong Duke’s position in this is? I believe future Dukie Josh Hairston is on the same team as Terrence and I’m hoping that helps Duke here.

TR could have checked out those schools from the beginning. I wish him the best wherever he goes. I think TR should definitely talk to Keith Booth about how it felt to propel UMD forward as a key recruit that got the ball rolling in the 90′s after the Wizard stayed on with Gary even though the NCAA sanctions were there. UMD fans are forever indebted to Walt and Keith… TR could have a chance to being remembered similarly, but may just become another cog in the machine of Cal, become part of a vacated Final Four, or learn how to play soft for the NBA with Coach Krybaby…

I’m not a big Maryland fan. As a former college top recruited athlete a long time ago and as a father of 2 fast growing athlete young man, I think I understand how Ross would feel at this point. I love to give him my opinion.
Firstly, Ross and his family need to understand that right now not a single comments or feedbacks from any of Maryland’s fan are going to be positive one right now which is understandable because they were having such high hope and so much believe in this kid. What they need to understand is that after all making university decision is still a personal one. However, the communication processes was not being handling too well for this big group of high caliber fans. What Ross needs to know that it is totally ok still if he choose to go to Maryland but he needs to learn to communicate well and have use this event to in his advantage no matter what his outcome is.
However, I believe that Maryland was and still is Ross’s best college choice. The reason is this program is just right for him. All the others recruits are chosen to complement his skills and performance. All other school was never focusing on him until they need to fill in a gap and he just happen to be easy target just because Maryland is currently not doing so hot while being in the process of building up their future championship team. In doing so they would also prevent Maryland to have any great chances for the next few years. His original heart feeling was with Maryland from the start. Now he has some understandably doubts. This is where one needs to made the right decision for both his carrier and dignity. The way I see it is that all his choices have great program to develop and staging his ability for his future NBA path. There is only one that was build focusing right on him and right for him. The choice which he will perceive as Honorable man anyone needs to learn and grow up to be. He needs to look at the bigger picture and look beyond Maryland’s current performance.
May God be with him and help him made the right decision here.

Gee, of course we are upset. You don’t have to be a Father or, a former highly recruited athlete to say to yourself…..WHY??? Maryland will always be a great institution of learning along with great athletic programs. If anyone follows Maryland athletics they will see the National Championships in ALL SPORTS. The only reason he wants to go somewhere else is for his potential NBA career. His college basketball career will probably consist of two years. He thinks he will get more EXPOSURE at a Kentucky or Duke and, he might. My problem is why wait sooooooo long to let Maryland know whats up?!?!?!? With the class we had come in this year and Ross’ class we could have been one of the best programs in the nation. Why now for the second thoughts. Its all about the future $$$ he and his family want to cash in on in the next couple of years…. SAD, SO VERY SAD……

Not sure who your “source” is, but quoting a blogger who knows nothing about the situation isn’t a “source”. I can’t wait for the day when a site like yours gets sued for broadcasting false information. His coach at Montrose, Stu Vetter has said Maryland still leads for him. Maybe next time, do a little research.

Bob you look pretty stupid now! I have to be honest the info here is pretty much dead on. I can’t believe Duke’s luck though… CRAZY!

This really doesn’t have anything to do with luck. Duke’s program has been excellent for years. They have an outstanding team and coach (Maryland does as well) with a great recruiting class coming in. Put yourself in TR’s shoe’s for a minute. He chose Maryland because at the time that was his best offer. He didn’t sign for a reason. He improved his game over the last year and now feels he needs to choose the best “offer” at this time. If I improve my skills as an employee wouldn’t I want to pick that best job that benefits me? Even if that means leaving my current employer for a new one? Harrison Barnes chose N.C. over Duke. He thought N.C. was a better fit for him. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for these kid’s. I’m sure playing ball and being friends with J. Hairston has something to do with it as well. IMO, he will get much more exposure at Duke, just as good or better coaching and will have a better chance at a championship… which every kid dreams of.

Hmm, what does this say about a once prominent Duke program that had its pick of the liter, when they now have to get turned down by their first two choices (Harrison Barnes, and Roscoe Smith) only to step up at the last minute to show interest in a Terrence Ross?
