Josh Selby’s mother, Maeshon Witherspoon, confirmed to us recently that her son would indeed be kicking off 2010 with two key visits. The Lake Clifton-Eastern High (Md.) star guard will be at Kentucky the weekend of Jan. 2 when the ‘Cats host Louisville, and at Arizona the weekend of Jan. 9 when the other ‘Cats host Washington.
Selby, the 7th-rated prospect in the HSH Top 50, de-committed from Tennessee last summer and had recently cut his list down to Kansas, Kentucky, Syracuse and Indiana. Apparently, Arizona is the fifth school on the list.
What’s even more telling is the fact that Arizona is jumping in with Selby at all, because Detroit Country Day (Mich.) point guard Ray McCallum Jr. had been their No. 1 lead guard target for a while now.
When asked last night what he thinks about Arizona upping their interest in Selby, McCallum said, “I guess they’re trying to recruit the best of the best.”
Word is there’s a good chance that McCallum, the 32nd-rated prospect in the HSH Top 50, could indeed end up playing for his dad, Ray Sr., who is the head coach at Detroit-Mercy. A top-level talent shunning the more prestigious schools (UCLA, Arizona, Florida and Oklahoma) on his list for a mid-major would be one of the more interesting tales of this recruiting class.
Some think the younger McCallum is only paying Detroit lip service, perhaps to help his father land some better recruits who think they might get to play with an elite PG. But to be fair, Ray Jr. has always maintained to us that the possibility is very real.
“People don’t believe me when I say that I’m considering them (Detroit),” McCallum told HSH last month. “But I really am.”
