Mabry eclipses Phil Ford’s scoring record

In four years at Rocky Mount (N.C.) High School, TaShawn Mabry has drained plenty of three-pointers and put up more than his share of 30-point games.
But what made Mabry’s three from the right wing during the third quarter of Tuesday’s game against Northern Nash special was that it allowed him to bypass former Rocky Mount legend Phil Ford on the school’s all-time scoring list.
Mabry finished with 31 points in the blowout win, giving him a career total of 2,102.
Ford, who starred at the University of North Carolina and went on to become the NBA Rookie of the Year in 1979, finished his high school career with 2,093 points. Buck Williams — a three-time NBA All-Star and Rookie of the Year in ’82 — ranks third on Rocky Mount’s scoring list.
“Coach told me at halftime that I needed seven more points to tie it,” said Mabry, whose Gryphons are ranked No. 1 in the state. “I made a layup then I made a three, and I knew I needed three more to get (the record) so I took the three. I knew that it was going in when I shot it. It felt good to get the record. It’s a big honor for me.”
On the season, Mabry is averaging 24 points, 10 rebounds, five blocks, two steals and four assists.
As for his recruitment, Mabry, who is ranked No. 45 in the HSH national top 50, is hearing from Virginia Tech, Rhode Island, Duke, Elon, Georgia Tech, Old Dominion and Clemson.
“I’m not in any rush,” said Mabry.
