Lacey ready for the AAU season
Words. Jason Jordan

Back in early February, a knee injury sidelined Butler High (Huntsville, Ala.) combo guard Trevor Lacey for the rest of the season. Now he’s looking to make up for lost time on the AAU circuit, running alongside Winter Park (Fla.) guard Austin Rivers on Each One Teach One out of Florida.
We chatted with Lacey, a junior, to clear up stories of rumored leaders, have him weigh in on where he feels he stands in the rankings, and much more.

HighSchoolHoop: Was it hard to sit?
Trevor Lacey: Definitely. One time my teammate went up for a dunk and I just jumped up to cheer for him and my whole team was like “Noooo!” I wasn’t supposed to be jumping, but everything felt fine. It was hard though.
HSH: What was your high point total this season?
TL: I had 41 points once this season.
HSH: That’s definitely putting in work. Run me down your list of colleges.
TL: Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi State, Memphis, UCLA, Florida, Auburn and a few other SEC schools.
HSH: Is it true that Alabama and Tennessee make up your top two?
TL: Not really. Alabama has been losing out on big time in-state recruits like (Kentucky duo) Eric Bledsoe and DeMarcus Cousins so they’re basically trying to keep the top in-state recruits at home. They’re on me a little harder than other schools because they’re so close I guess.
HSH: When you say they’re on you harder, what do you mean?
TL: It’s basically like a mind thing. They tell you how much they need and want you. They’ll say things like how big it would be to stay at home and play for Alabama. I guess you could say that they have a more original pitch.
HSH: Does that appeal to you?
TL: It’s cool to hear, but I’m still pretty open.
HSH: How much will close proximity figure in to your ultimate decision?
TL: Not too much. My parents tell me to make the best decision for me. They don’t pressure me to stay home.
HSH: So who are you running with on the AAU circuit?
TL: I think I’ll be running with Each One Teach One out of Florida. I’m pretty excited about it.
HSH: You and Austin, huh?
TL: Oh yeah, we make a tough duo. We play really well together.
HSH: With so many good combo guards and wings in your class, where do you feel like you fall in the rankings?
TL: I definitely feel like I’m up there with the best. I’m working hard and getting better all the time and I am really ready to have a big showing on the circuit this season.
HSH: So what’s your ultimate goal for the AAU season?
TL: I’m just trying to have a big summer so I can be in position to make the McDonald’s All-American game. I mean everyone wants to look back and say “I was a McDonald’s All-American.” So that’s what my goal is for the summer. I’m ready to get it started!
