Duke/UNC rivalry already picking up steam
Words. Jason Jordan

UNC signee Kendall Marshall
Duke may be sitting atop the college basketball world right now coming off its 2010 national championship, and North Carolina may still be sulking from its NIT title game loss, but the most storied rivalry in college sports should return to its usual competitive intensity next season.
DraftExpress.com caught up with Duke’s star Class of 2010 signee, point guard Kyrie Irving (St. Patrick H.S., Elizabeth, N.J.), and North Carolina incoming recruits Kendall Marshall (Bishop O’Connell, Arlington, Va.), Reggie Bullock (Kinston, N.C.) and Harrison Barnes (Ames, Iowa) at the McDonald’s All-American game and got their thoughts on the state of each program and what would happen next year. There were plenty of gems, but the best verbal jab came from Bullock, who said, “(Coach K) looks like a rat!”

I’m all for being open and honest, but at some point you have stop saying what you think/believe, and say what is right! It’s apparent which guys have had previous media training!
bulloch needs to look in the mirror he has no room to talk about someone’s looks. he resembles a monkey with those huge nostrils. these 3 punks will get whipped by coach k also, as he has re-loaded for another strong season next year with at least 2 more whippings against the tarholes and these 3 clowns. these videos remind me of the old 3 stooges cartoons.
I want whatever… mike b is smoking. Those unathletic punks at Duke won because of a down year in college basketball. That is like winning the most gold medals at the special olympics. UNC was missing perimeter play… they got that now to go with the post players. Great athlets and fundamentals vs fundamentals… UNC wins.
Unathletic maybe true, but it is not dukes fault it was a down year in college basketball. its not dukes fault kansas choked again, or georgetown getting beat by ohio or unc making the nit. its not like it was dukes best and most athletic team ever. difference is they bought into the system, he recruited kids he could coach and unlike other schools that get one and done and dont care if they win or not. i am a huge fan of duke but i am stoked to see harrison barnes and have no dislike for the kid, he is going to be great. on the other hand bullock needs to take a lesson from his future teammate and shut his mouth until he proves something.
RC, I agree with you that it’s not Duke’s fault that it is a down year. The only point from that aspect was being made is that it wasn’t like Duke defeated all the magnificent teams. They took advantage of a down year. You play the cards you are dealt there is no shame in that. You take advantage of the advantages you are given. UNC was down because it reaped the benefit of developing talented players who won them and National Championship and they were talented enough to be high round draft picks before their senior year. They recruit talent hat usually translates into good pros. Bullock and those guys are playing, I mean Irving is running his mouth as well… who cares? They are kids who are all having fun. Now does Bullock need to back it up… yes but they are not taking themselves very seriously and no one with maturity should.
Dre, Name the last really good pro under Roy’s umbrella from UNC? It’s not like they are blazing a path out of college. All this talk of translation into good pro’s I haven’t seen it. Not since the days of Dean have they came out of college and tore it up. The kids out of UNC are taking as long to develop as other kids from other schools. Yes Duke has had some flops I’m not going to disagree with that. None of the guys from Roy’s first national championship (not his recruits) are smoking a path except for maybe marvin williams and recently ty lawson.
Sorry but Marvin Williams is his recruit, whether they are his recruits or not he developed them into champions. Felton is not a superstar but definitely a solid pg that has never been in danger of going over seas or to the NBDL. Roy has had two full 8 year recruiting classes. That is going from freshman-senior. Except for Ty Lawson who had a great rookie year, it is too late to see what happens with the guys that left last year. Ellington had a solid year for a rookie. The point is they were coveted and able to leave school at those points. Duke’s players are not everyone knows that Duke’s players always take longer to develop into good pros if they ever do. I love Boozer’s game and Brand came on after a year or two and then flamed out. Also another point you are missing is that UNC had 4 players get drafted off of their team last year… only an idiot would expect a lot out of that team this year.
wow that was kinda racist wit the monkey thing…calm down kid
his laugh sounds like te screeh of a monkey, bullock is an idiot
If saying a kid looks like a monkey is racist, what would you call saying a coach looks like a rat? Hmm? Thought so.
“Duke’s wings can’t guard me?” um, high school superstar, you’re potentially talking about the tourney MOP Kyle Singler who locked up Lace Dunn, DaSean Butler and Gordon Hayward. Pure ignorance.
Beyond that, unc hasn’t come close to fixing their point guard problem. Drew didn’t leave, Strickland isn’t close to being solid at the 1 and Kendall Marshall led his team to an 8-8 conference record in a private school league! Keep those brooms handy, here come another Duke sweep!
UNC has definitely fixed their perimeter play… Singler needed help to guard everyone one of those players as they drove past him everytime they got the ball. Kendall plays in the strongest high school basketball conference in the country. PG problem fixed… Singler plays great off of screens… still not athletic enough to guard a great athlete. He always have and always will need help. If it wasn’t for Zubeck on the play before the long heave in the championship game. Haywood wins the game by blowing past the unathletic one. Learn basketball.
So what if singler has to come off screens. last time i checked that is part of basketball. is he evan turner, no. he is not a stud athlete, what he is though is a solid basketball player who plays every possession much like your beloved hansbrough. you are turning a team sport into an individual contest and maybe that is why unc was watching as duke cut down the nets…
RC, read the post above… and stop challenging everything I say. He was talking about Singler locking down players when that is an untrue statement… that was why I said what I did. Read what I am responding to. Yes, basketball is a team sport and part of being a good teammate is keeping your man in front of you so I don’t have to keep helping yo ass out. The only reason UNC is watching Duke cut down the nets is because their team was talented enough to have 4 players drafted last year… thank you.
I’m not challenging you after everything you say. All I am saying and I agreed with you that Singler is not a superb athlete and yes he may have gotten beat off the dribble here and there, but if you go back to any of those games he had as many block shots from behind as any other player on the court. Being an ex player like you said you should know that everyone is going to get beat off the dribble a time or two. He never quit on the play and challenged every shot, that is why those players he defended shot bad percentages also the help defense like you said helped a lot. There are not a lot of truly lock down defenders in the college game. I played college ball myself and I coach as well. I am not going to disagree with anything you said about keeping you man in check, but also know that the best defenders need help every once in a while because no matter what level good offense is going to beat good defense when it comes to man to man defense.
You know what RC, you made a very valid point my friend and I agree with you. I actually had a hard time being “won over” on defense when I got to high school. Like most knuckleheaded kids I wanted all the glory that came with scoring and I was pretty good at it and was a pretty good athlete. My coach knew how important defense was and knew I had the tools to be a great defensive player. I really wasn’t trying to hear it, i was more comfortable conserving my energy playing defense in space and either trying to block shot, on a help out or from behind or steal the ball from behind. This wouldn’t work on a team that played 85% pressure man to man all of the time so he sat me. I always though my offensive game would suffer because at time you get tried from playing defense hard. When I learned to be a monster on defense that it could also help my offense with steals, I became a better all-around player. Your post made me thing about that.
Also people look at these guys on TV and think that oh, they are weak athletes I can do what they do if I practice… nah not true. Even the guys on the bench in D1 are good athletes and are better athletes then the majority of the guys at gyms playing for fun. I learned that when I made it to college.
Learn Basketball? Learn about the team you cheer for. Ol Roy wins when he has an elite pg. Not a good one, elite. Jordan, Hinrich, Felton, Lawson, people like that. When you put average pg’s with Roys boys, you get average results. For example, this year. Kendall Marshall may be a player (not convinced) but he’s not suited to Roy’s style. Btw, I said fixing their pg problem, not the perimeter problem. Nice Try.
Here’s the shooting stats from all those super athletes guarded by slow, plodding, white (what you really mean when you say not athletic) Kyle Singler:
Christopher 1-4
Dunn 8-18
Butler 2-8
Hayward 2-11
Combined that’s 13-41 or 31.7%. You’d think with all those easy drives past Kyle, the numbers would look a little better. Maybe those guys just suck at layups.
Hey JP, obvious you don’t know basketball, first of all Marshall is an elite PG, he plays and shine in the hardest high school basketball conference in the nation. He can do every single thing Roy wants him to do, push the ball, score and set up teammates.
If I wanted to say white I would say white, there are great white athletes, Chase Budinger, Joe Alexander, Rex Chapman, Tom Chambers, Bob Sura, etc. I am a man, I say what’s on my mind.
What I am saying is Duke players have great b-ball IQs, and they are a great help defending team, meaning they rotate well. There is nothing wrong with that at all. What I am saying is Singler didn’t lock anyone up but because of the rotation of the Duke’s team defense it made it look like he was doing something. Look at the charges that Duke got in those games… excellent help defense. Look at the come over blocks by Lance Thomas. However as an ex-player and a current coach I know even though I might have a great helping team behind me it still puts a lot of pressure on them when they have to help me out because my man went past me. It is so much better when a player can truly lock his defender down with minimal help. It takes the pressure off of the 5 as a whole. That is what I mean, and that is what it is. Not taking anything away from Duke but I’m not manufacturing things that really are not there.
Oh and I forgot about the Plumlee’s are great athletes was well… Singler just isn’t.
Dre, I agree with you on Marshall. Although he is not a speedster like felton or lawson, what he is is a facilitator. He controls the game and never gets ahead of himself. He makes the easy play every time and that turns into the right play every time. I think he is going to be good for a while, unc fans r going to like him. Look I am a Duke fan but I am a college basketball fan first and I really like his game. UNC will definitely be back next year. Loosing Davis hurts and if Zeller can stay healthy, they have the pieces. It will be more like the old days next year. Both teams will be more evenly matched then in the past 4-5 years.
True about that RC, I couldn’t have said it better myself. Davis leaving hurts some but he was injured most of the year… what happened was a lot of other guys got some much needed experience so it will cushion the blow quite considerably. I’m like you, I love this game and I consider myself a student of the game. I go to coaching clinics several times a year trying to learn more and get better. I work with Marshall at O’Connell, and actually Wootten makes him push the ball pretty fast up court a lot of the time and he can still stay in control. He is a cross between a poor man’s J. Kidd and C. Billups.
ok, that clears it up, to you, athletic means jump really high. Let me guess, you think John Henson is a great athlete even though he can’t dribble, shoot or get his own shot? Kyle Singler is supremely athletic. You don’t handle the ball at 6’8, lock up the quality of players that he locks down(not manufactured, just stats/facts) and switch from a 4/5 as a frosh to a primary 4 as a soph to a 3 as a junior in the ACC without elite athleticism.
As to Marshall, I’ll have to see it. I want my elite pg’s to lead their high school teams to better than 8-8 conference records. No matter how sweet that private school league he plays in is, I’m sure the ACC is a bit better. Then again, an 8-8 conference record would be a huge jump for unc so maybe they’ll be fine with KM.
Hey JP, u know jack about ball… it is hilarious. I bet you that Henson is a better athlete then Singler. News Flash genius, because you can dribble the ball, shoot, and get your own shot (which Singler NEEDS a pick to do 75% of the time) does not make you a great athlete… not at all. It makes you a skilled athlete. There are fantastic athletes who can’t do any of those things because they are not skilled. Now if you ask me if Singler is a supremely skilled athlete i would say yes without a doubt. I’m still not agreeing that he locked all these people down but everyone up here knows Duke’s help defense is 2nd to none they are known for moving into great position and getting charges and if you look at their games they don’t get a lot of one on one man to man charges. They get help defense charges, which I have no problem with. You are giving a little too much credit to Singler then he should get and not enough to your team. I must say I haven’t see a team play like Duke did year where everyone was so accepting over their roles since the Bulls with MJ. Not that Duke had a star like that but everyone really played as a team and knew their roles.
As for Marshall, I know it might be hard for you to understand but Duke has a recruit coming from that same little private school league while you are trying to down play it. That league is the toughest in the US more college recruits come out of that conference then any other. Think… use your brain… there is a reason that his team went 8-8 in that conference and he still got chosen to all these All-Star games. They know it’s a difference between his conference where their teams are always the strongest and everyone else is weak. Did the light bulb go off yet?
As far as UNC is concerned, Duke just got back competitive this year after a few years of being mediocre for a while. Let’s see if you can keep it.
I totally agree with you. I was fortunate myself to play d1 ball and people do not understand that those kids are there for a reason. Even the kids on the bench are good players and could play at a lot of other programs across the country. Yea I forgot that Marvin was Roy’s recruit i was thinking of the rest of the team. jj’s coming along though (give me that) lol. Take care and good luck with all your coaching. maybe catch ya on another blog
JP, you are picking the wrong battle. singler is good enough athletically to do all the things that you are saying. but in comparison to some of the other players you mentioned he is not as athletic as those guys. he is what he is and that is what dre said, he is supremely skilled and well coached. there is nothing wrong with that. now if he stays another year he can definitely work on his foot speed and creating a few more shots on his own in a one in one situation. km will do just fine. he’s long for a point guard and does what his team needs from him. just look at the mcdonalds game. he didn’t put up crazy stats but he also didn’t have any stupid plays. like singler he is what he is and he will grow on that.
Obviously u don’t know basketball cause that was UNC’s problem and I had already spoke on Marshall. I’ve worked on the O’Connell staff this year and he is a player you will see.
Thanks RC, yeah man i got my first reality check when I went to the gym on campus and it was a bunch of the so-called bench guys. I got my shot blocked twice in a row and the ball stolen from me before I realized I really had to play and hit the guy. Hey would love to get together with you and shoot some basketball ideas around with you. Feel free to e-mail me at the_wb91@hotmail.com .
As far as JJ is concerned, don’t tell anybody but I am huge Redick fan, I mean I secretly cheered for him when Duke played anybody but UNC. I believe he got a bum rap because he is a great guy, I met him twice. I love his jumper and I copied his form. I also know and I’m cool with Trajan we went throw knee rehab together.
i will definitely send you an e-mail. I’m not so much in the coaching teams as I am in the individual stuff. My buddy and i both played college ball and we are stating a one on one service here where we live. then possibly let that grow into bigger and better stuff. i could use new ideas on drills and training stuff for sure. rchancler@suddenlinkmail.com
same thing goes with me for hansbrough, only when he played against duke did i cheer against him.
Some of these comments are crazy. So I assume none of us said anything outlandish, disrespectful, or insenstive as HS Seniors either?
im plenty calm kwame. im not a kid either. BOY. you the one that needs to calm down. I have many black friends, carolina and duke fans alike, who agree, bulloch resembles a monkey, just calling like we see it. nothing racist here, i love people of all color, creed and decent. people need to realize whats good for the goose is good for the gander
Singler looks like a pastey face ghoul. Why does he look like a monkey cause he is a dark-skinned brother? Oh the I have black friends statement… sure u do.
Plus, dude… they r jopking and having fun. They are not taking theselves seriously… why should u guys.
I hope the usually “QUIET”, “SHY” and “RESERVED” R. BULLOCK CAN BACK UP THAT TALK, me being a UNC fan and all.
But what was KI talking about 75pts?? Yall beat us handedly the 2nd gm….but the first game we had a chance 2 win that. At the end of the day “had a chance” and “won” is 2 totally different things, i’m just saying it was much closer than 75pts.
It was more around 42-44pts…i might b a few pts off, i’m definetly much closer than KI was!

wow, so yaw really takin what a group of teenagers said jokingly as serious, wow, let them live they lives, ok, bullock made outta pocket comments, but he’s entitled to his opinion, and yeah, coach k look like a rat, but bullock does look like a monkey, but whatever, lt them have they fun, they still in high school, remember
Reggie Bullock and the guys are funny dudes. I’m going to enjoy watching the Terps upset them next year since they’re so loaded. Same goes for the champs.
We have to understand that Bullocks been living this his whole basketball life. He’s the only one in these videos that has grown up in NC living this rivalry. Those of us who were born and raised in NC know who ugly UNC vs Duke trash talking sessions can get. The fact that the other kids in the video were so shocked and surprised shows that they aren’t emotionally attached to this yet like Reggie has been for a long time. It may not be “PC” but atleast he’s not being fake.
That is very true RJ, I am in the DC area now and I work with Kendall but I grew up in NC… I know what it means. However I wonder if Kendall does, he has been a hardcore UNC fan his whole life… he definitely should know something about it. However that is a good point you brought up.
Also, they probably all were talking serious crap behind closed doors and Reggie is just bringing stuff that they all say about each other to light.
Is there really a discussion about someone for the 1,000,000,000,000,000,000th time (to throw a conservative # out there), calling K a rat?! I think the only thing I find shocking is the complete and utter lack of creativity. Young man, you’re about to find yourself in the triangle, where ACC basketball is religion and trash talk is an art form. I’ll let ya in on a few more things ya should know so ya don’t embarrass yourself…. Carolina boys are above mockery, cause Dean said so and gosh dang it now so does Roy (epitome of classy guy by the way). Duke fans think they’re above everybody. Just ask one. His mommy and daddy spent a lot of money over the years buying him respect. My loyal Wolfpack fans and I meanwhile have earned the right to be childish, rude, politically incorrect, and down right mean. It’s the reward for our loyalty after the many many many years of hope to heartache we’ve endured. And we’ll have you for an appetizer before we even fire up the grill if you bring that weak ass shit to this party. Welcome to the ACC Reggie.
Hey might not consider it to be trash talking since Duke and other fans a like have said that about K. It might be what is considered to be a fact. Why get creative with something many consider a fact, Dean Smith has a big nose, Roy sounds like Huckleberry Hound and K looks like a Rat. I mean how creative does someone need to get when saying water is wet?
justplayin, but that’s why wolfpack fans should just be quiet. If anyone have earned the right to talk smack over the years it’s UNC and Duke. As someone from ACC country, I am puzzled my ACC brotha… why do Pack fans talk so much crap. For the most part UNC and Duke generally are much more quieter when their teams are not good. However State fans talk crap no matter what their team looks like. A new person coming into the situation would think State is just as good as UNC and Duke have been if they hadn’t done the research. Also, why do you have to be so nasty? Carter Finley has F Bomb alley and the State fans are nasty. What does that accomplish but making the teams won’t to beat the hell out of you even more?
these 3 clowns should be practicing so unc only loses to duke by 22 next year instead of 32. making childish videos mocking one of the top 2-3 coaches of all-time is a waste of energy. if i were a unc fan i would want them to work on thier games instead of insults. im sure roy williams, who i respect, is not amused by this , and hopes these clowns mature so they can get out of cameron with a loss of less than 20 points next year
They are always working on their games… since UNC’s teams are talented enough to send so many people pro they face a burden that only a few teams have to deal with. Check Duke’s record against UNC over the past 5 years. Duke finally won a game against UNC at home this year. If K lost as many players as UNC at one time, it would surely cause another back problem.
Plus, it is a joke… pull the stick out of your @$$.
First things first, Duke has no answers for Harrison Barnes. Secondly, look for Duke to do a lot of thugging as they always do. Singler will be schooled offensively and defensively by Barnes, Bullock is to big and long for Curry, and Henson and Knox will be swatting the kid Kyrie all night long. Duke is finished.
