HS Rumors: Quincy Miller leader, Myck Kabongo de-commit

For the last two weeks at numerous tournaments around the country, an interesting buzz has been growing around Findlay Prep (Nev.) point guard Myck Kabongo.

The hot rumor among players and coaches is that Kabongo, a rising senior, was strongly considering de-committing from Texas, where he’s been seemingly solid for more than a year. When we caught up with Kabongo to ask him about the buzz, he was amused.

“Wow, is that what they’re saying?” asked Kabongo. “I definitely hear some crazy stuff like that sometimes, but I can definitely tell you that I’m going to Texas. That’s 150 percent sure. No story here.”

Maybe not, but the latest buzz surrounding Westchester Academy (High Point, N.C.) forward Quincy Miller is front-page newsworthy.

The word in Orlando last week was that Miller, who many perceive to be favoring Kentucky, is actually leaning toward Louisville ever since it hired former Wake Forest player turned Nike employee Tim Fuller, who is close with Miller, a rising senior.

“Tim Fuller is a great guy,” Miller told the Courier-Journal. “I definitely keep in touch with coach Fuller. He wants to help me develop and become a good player, and that’s what I want to become.”

A reliable source said that Miller wants to commit to Louisville, but is worried that Cards coach Rick Pitino could potentially hold him back from being a one-and-done player. The Cards have also offered Miller’s best friend and teammate Deuce Bello. Both Miller and Bello are scheduled to visit Louisville on the weekend of Sept. 4.

Quincy is gonna still be a Wildcat! Cal is gonna pay him big bucks to be in Lexington!

funny thing is Pitino says he doesnt want one and dones but he is letting Fuller recruit Quincy Miller who will never think of playing 2 yrs. Pitino feels so beat down by Calipari that he is going against everything he says.

Pitino didnt even let Peyton Siva play last year and he was the best guard on that team. Last time Pitino got a highly ranked player, the player couldnt wait to leave cause he wasnt being devoloped and the player went undrafted.

You’re right Miller. Pitino will hold you back. He’s never had a one and done player…EVER! He wanted Samuels to stick around another year before he entered his name into the draft. Ask Siva about his playing time his first year. Best of Luck to you.

I’d be worried too if I was Quincy. He should stick with his original plan of waiting till Spring. Even if Davis ends up at Kentucky they could still have a spot for him if Jones declares after one year(likely).

Also, he’ll get better offers than UofL. If Ohio State misses on Davis I wouldn’t be shocked to see them start pushing for Miller. Who would you rather play for right now? Matta or Fiftino? Easy answer IMO.

Rick is an egomaniac and the presence of Fuller on the bench isn’t going to be enough to assure Miller gets his 30 minutes a game.

On the flipside though if they land q miller and his stock slips out of the lottery that will make it even harder for Pitino to recruit guys like that down the line. Many have said Miller is the best NBA prospect in the 2011 class.

  6. MartinM says:

Rick knows this and may try to go to Miller everytime down the court just to make sure he goes lottery or better.

Pitino has never sent a player to the league after one year though. Samuels was supposed to be one and done and went undrafted after years under Pitino.

It doesn’t stop there either. Lots of guys have underachieved under Rick at UofL. Caracter, Palacios, Sosa, Samuels…the list goes on. You could even make a case for Earl Clark although he did eventually go lottery in a weak draft.

I’m not saying it can’t work for Miller at UofL but the wise thing to do would be to wait it out and explore all options. There basketball program does not appear to be stable right now.

Funny how Pitino always seems to hire somebody with a close connection to a prospective recruit. C’mon. How transparent is that? Can’t believe the NCAA allows it. (Do they?)

  8. J says:

    UK has pulled Miller’s offer.

  9. E-Smooth says:

Kabongo is going to de-commit I don’t care what he says now! Just watch.

    Per Quincy Miller’s Twitter:

“People twist my words up all the time..I never said pitino would hold me back from being one and done…and I’m not leaning any way”

What’s he supposed to say Logan?
      Don’t be so gullible.
Since this story everyone is claiming the same thing so I’m calling bs on Quincy and his Twitter!

It’s funny when I read the commits that are left. I think to myself that they are bunch of Kentucky fans with too much time on their hands. Starting off when recruiting Samuels everyone said that he was better than Greg Monroe, but that wasn’t case. Greg was a better passer and finisher and that’s why he got drafted unlike Samuels. Both of them left their teams after their sophomore season. If Samuels was more dominate he would have been a one and done, he got penty of playing time. The difference between Pitino and Calipari is Pitino is a better coach and he makes his players shoot free throws and play defence.

  12. Oh Good Lord says:

Uh Oh Sam…. I see a uofl fan is freaking out and thinking that maybe Miller might figure out that Rick Pitino is the NBA dream killer.

News Flash uofl fans…. he’s not gonna end up wasting his time on a joke of a program like the one in Louisville. He’ll either end up at Duke or Baylor.

And Sam, buddy…. it’s “defense” you big dummy.

    • Sam says:

Sam is from Houston and that is the best you got? Ha well where I live louisville is on ESPN two times a week and Kentucky never plays unless they are playing Louisville so they must be doing something right. Your a joke and your program and I love it, you maybe get the number 1 recruiting class three years in a row. But freshman will not get you a championship. Keep dreaming, West Virginia smoked you and your life as a Kentucky fan is utter disappointment.

      • Sam says:

One more thing redneck, Answer me this how is Rick Pitino a NBA dream killer when he has had more former players that went to the NBA than Calipari?
