HSH 1-on-1: Jacob Lawson is on the rise
Words. Jason Jordan

Oak Ridge (N.C.) Military Academy’s Jacob Lawson has some of the best upside that we’ve seen all summer. The 6-7 long and wiry forward, who runs with the CP3 All-Stars AAU, has a motor that doesn’t quit, a high-wire act that would make a young Vince Carter envious, and the relentless mindset that makes it all work.
“I just work hard when I’m on the floor,” said Lawson, a rising senior. “I try and raise everyone’s level of play when I’m out there. I want everyone to play with the same energy level that I have.”
HighSchoolHoop: So how has the summer been going?
Jacob Lawson: It’s been going pretty well. Our team is doing good. We all play well together.
HSH: You’re one of the most active, high energy big men I’ve seen on the circuit all summer.
JL: Yeah I just try and go out there and play as hard as I can every game. I like to block shots and run the floor and finish. I like playing defense and all of that too.
HSH: That’s not something you hear everyday.
JL: Yeah it’s not like I don’t like to score. I love to score, but I just like to do everything else too. I try and make an impact in a lot of different ways.
HSH: What schools are you considering?
JL: Alabama, Colorado, N.C. State, Wake Forest, Syracuse, Seton Hall, Miami, West Virginia, Clemson, Mississippi State… There are a lot of schools.
HSH: I’d say so. Is the first step cutting the list?
JL: Yeah. My dad and I have been talking about it and we want to get it down to at least five schools so I can start taking my officials.
HSH: Do you have a timeline for cutting your list down?
JL: Probably before school starts.
HSH: What about a timeline for a decision?
JL: I’ll probably decide around the spring time… I don’t know though. My dad wants me to cut the list down and make a decision right then. So I’m honestly not sure when I’ll actually decide.
HSH: Have you taken any unofficials visits?
JL: Yeah, I’ve visited Seton Hall and Syracuse. I want to take more visits though.
HSH: What is the biggest factor in your decision?
JL: Just finding the right fit for me. I want to go to a school that gets up and down the floor and presses and shares the ball. When I feel like I’ve found that, I’ll commit.
