Some very sad news for the high school basketball world came out this holiday weekend – Chicago basketball legend Mac Irvin passed away on Christmas Eve at the age of 74 after complications from diabetes.
Known in the city as “The Godfather,” Mac built and ran the Mac Irvin Fire. Started in the early 1990′s the Fire have always one of the country’s top AAU programs. Pretty much any Midwest high school basketball player of any notoriety has worked with Mac or one of his programs over the past several decades. Check out this news piece on Irvin that aired after his passing this weekend. MORE >

Back in the summer of 2006, the final of the Nike Peach Jam saw a monstrous Mean Streets Express AAU squad lock up with Team Final in the championship game.
Not only did the game come down to the wire in overtime, but it also prominently featured three future NBA stars going after each other: Derrick Rose and Eric Gordon on Mean Streets, and Tyreke Evans on Team Final.
‘Reke finished with 22 points, while Gordon led all scorers with 29. D-Rose ended up with 20, but it was his slicing drive past Tyreke in the final seconds of OT that sealed the deal.
Our friends at Hoopmixtape have the footage. Watch it here: MORE >

Prep players around the country are making hygienic changes in wake of the swine flu pandemonium.
Don’t get him wrong, Reggie Bullock has never been mistaken for a germaphobe or an obsessive compulsive or being socially awkward, but in lieu of the recent swine flu mania, Bullock readily ‘fessed up to being all of the above.
“I do a lot of things different these days,” says Bullock, a junior shooting guard from Kinston (N.C.) High, who is rated the No. 13 prospect in HighSchoolHoop top 50. “One of the biggest things I do now is wipe the ball off every deadball during games. Every little bit helps. This whole swine flu stuff is crazy.”
