HSH 1-on-1: Findlay Prep’s Myck Kabongo

Myck Kabongo

Words.

Austin Rivers, Anthony Davis and Michael Gilchrist have received the most attention amongst the Class of 2011 high school prospects, but you’d be crazy to overlook Myck Kabongo. The 6-2 point guard headed to Texas has a handle that can break down just about any defender, an innate ability to hit the open man and a lethal jumper with deep range that will cause issues for Big 12 opponents next year. We got up with the Toronto product this past weekend at the Jordan Brand Classic in Charlotte to discuss his off-court interests, his high school career – that included stops at two of the country’s premier programs – and his goals for next year. Findlay Prep’s Mike Peck vying for three-peat

Mike Peck

Words.

Findlay Prep (Henderson, NV) coach Mike Peck is anything but impractical. So when asked who he would pick if he could spend a few hours with anyone on Earth, it’s no wonder that Peck answered matter-of-factly, “Phil Jackson.”

Like Jackson’s L.A. Lakers, Peck’s Pilots are vying for a three-peat — a third straight ESPN Rise National High School Invitational title (widely considered the national championship of high school basketball). Peck knows the feat will be anything but easy. MORE >

Words.

College basketball is here. Tonight’s ESPNU doubleheader features Pitt vs. Rhode Island in one game, and Texas vs. Navy in the other. For Texas, it marks the debut of 2010 high school All-Americans Cory Joseph and Tristan Thompson. The PG/PF pair were teammates at Findlay Prep (Henderson, NV) last season and are part of a growing trend of Canadian-bred ballplayers taking over the States. Check out Cory and Tristan doing work in high school:

Top 10 High School Point Guards of the last 10 Years

(Tyreke Evans, photo. Brian Pineda)

Words.

We’re not so self-absorbed that we think our Top 10 list is gospel; let’s just say any argument that can be made to tweak this list can be countered masterfully.

Obviously, it’s tough to pick just 10 point guards over the course of a decade, but we decided the criteria would be based solely on what each player did at the high school level. We don’t care about college busts, NBA accolades, or catchy dances — it’s all about what a player did in high school and how dominant he was doing it. Here are the Top 10 high school point guards from 2000 to 2010. Let the debate begin… MORE >

1-on-1 with Myck Kabongo

Myck Kabongo

Words.

Unprompted, we’ve randomly asked a handful of players who their toughest defensive assignment has been all summer, and the name that consistently pops up is Findlay Prep (Henderson, Nev.) point guard Myck Kabongo, a rising senior who is committed to Texas. The reasoning?

He’s fast and quick and smart, and the consensus is that he blends all of those elements better than any other guard in the country.

“There’s no other player like him out there,” Word of God Academy (Raleigh, N.C.) combo guard Bishop Daniels said of Kabongo. “It’s hard to explain, but that guy is just really hard to defend.” MORE >

Harrow responds to McDonald’s All-American snub

Ryan Harrow

Words.

Ryan Harrow is beginning to sense a pattern.

Last week, after the selections for the 2010 McDonald’s All-American Game were announced live on ESPNU, Harrow — a senior point guard at Walton H.S. in Marietta, Ga. — once again found himself on the outside looking in as he was denied a career-defining opportunity. General consensus among several media and HSH readers was that Harrow was the biggest McD’s snub out of anybody.

“I found out that I didn’t make it about a week before it was announced,” said Harrow, ranked No. 26 in the HSH national Top 50. MORE >
