Austin Rivers: Don’t dismiss Duke despite Irving’s injury

Words.

It’s not that Winter Park (Fla.) senior Austin Rivers doesn’t understand the general sentiment of those who want to hop off the Duke Blue Devils bandwagon now that its dynamic freshman point guard, Kyrie Irving is sidelined with a serious toe injury. Rivers just don’t believe that Duke is done without Irving.

Rivers, a Duke signee for the 2011 class, said that even if Irving is out for the season, Duke “has a legitimate chance to repeat as national champs.” MORE >

(Sullinger, 2010 P.O.Y.)

It’s no secret that every high school star is looking ahead to a potential future in the NBA, but thanks to the League’s rulebook, any talk of “the next level” for now has to apply to college ball (or an overseas pro league).

With the NCAA season getting underway last week, we’ve gotten a look at some of the national Class of 2010′s best in their freshman debuts. Here is a recap of how the members of last season’s Dime/2K Sports H.S. All-American Team fared early in their next-level careers: MORE >

HSH 1-on-1: Quinn Cook is high on UNC, Duke, UCLA

Quinn Cook

Words.

When listing the top point guards in the 2011 class, it’s hard not to mention Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) star Quinn Cook near the top.

All Cook has done is remain consistent throughout the summer while running DC Assault, win gold with USA Basketball’s under-17 team, and cap off the AAU season with an MVP performance at adidas Nations.

“It’s been fun,” said Cook. “There were things that I felt I could’ve done better, but all in all I was OK with how I did this summer.” MORE >

Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) coach Steve Smith confirmed to us recently that he would indeed be getting another stellar point guard to run his team next season.

Quinn Cook, a rising senior, has decided to transfer from DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, Md.) and lead the Warriors.

“I’m looking forward to coaching him,” said Smith. MORE >

Kyrie Irving: “I’m leaning toward Duke”

Kyrie Irving

Words.

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that St. Patrick’s High (N.J.) point guard (and Bounce Magazine cover guy) Kyrie Irving told us last night that he was “leaning toward Duke.”

Remember we reported a while ago that Irving, who is rated the No. 6 prospect in the High School Hoop Top-50, would commit to Duke either during his official visit to Durham, which happened this past weekend, or shortly thereafter. It appears he’s going with the latter.

We caught up with Irving last night and asked him the tough, straightforward questions about his big visit, which included a matchup against former Duke great Jason Williams. MORE >
