HSH 1-on-1: Gary Bell is a Bulldog on the court

Gary Bell

Words.

Gary Bell lives for the big moment, so it’s understandable that he would get impatient waiting three years to shine in his own city.

No matter how many buckets and accolades Bell, a 6-2, 200-pound combo guard, racked up at Kentridge High School (Kent, WA), he was always second on the marquee under All-American Josh Smith at rival Kentwood High, who cast a 6-10, 300-pound shadow over the South Puget Sound League and the state of Washington’s prep scene in general. When Kentucky knocked off Washington in a matchup of Top-15 nationally ranked teams in the Maui Invitational last night, Garfield H.S. (Seattle, WA) guard Tony Wroten knew that, as a man of his word, he’d have to do something that was going to be tough.

Wroten, a Washington signee in the Class of 2011, and St. Patrick (Elizabeth, NJ) swingman Michael Gilchrist, a Kentucky signee, had made a friendly wager before the game. The consequence of the Huskies losing was that Wroten would have to post some uncomfortable tweets: MORE >

VIDEO: Tony Wroten commits to Washington

Words.

When it comes to creative ways to announce a college decision, Tony Wroten Jr. might have given Harrison Barnes a run for his money. While the Garfield H.S. Two of the top guards in the country — and arguably the two best players on the West Coast — both ended their recruitment Thursday, the conclusion of two longstanding “Guess Where?” debates that had been ongoing for months.

Oakland (CA) High School shooting guard Jabari Brown, ranked 12th in the HSH National Top 50, verbally committed to the University of Oregon, while Garfield H.S. (Seattle, WA) point guard Tony Wroten Jr., ranked 20th nationally, opted to stay home and attend the University of Washington. MORE >

Before he commits to a college in an scheduled Oct. 7 press conference, Garfield High School (Seattle, WA) point guard Tony Wroten Jr. has one pressing question that he needs answered.

On Monday, Wroten, a 6-5 senior who is ranked 20th in the HSH National Top 50, went on Twitter to hit up Kentucky coach John Calipari. “@UKCoachCalipari aye coach. I just wanna know why u stopped recruiting me?” MORE >

Wroten’s new Top 5 includes big surprise

If you thought LeBron James was wrong to keep so many basketball fan bases in suspense while he made his free-agency decision, you’re not going to like Tony Wroten Jr.

The Garfield H.S. (Seattle, WA) senior is the best player in his state, arguably the best on the West Coast, and certainly among the most gifted players in the entire country. Wroten, a 6-5 lefty combo guard, didn’t even play basketball last season due to a knee injury he suffered while playing wide receiver on the Bulldogs’ football team, but he is nonetheless being targeted by just about any high-profile college you can imagine.
