Austin Rivers at the Brandon Jennings Invitational

Words.

As the No. 1 player in the HSH National Top 50, as well as quite a few other rankings, Austin Rivers (Winter Park, FL) is going to be the main attraction at pretty much any high school basketball event for which he shows up. It was no different at the Brandon Jennings Invitational this past Saturday, where Rivers, a Duke signee, dropped 35 points in an overtime loss to Boys & Girls (NY) that will be broadcast on national TV in February. While in Milwaukee for the showcase, Rivers caught up with Evan Daniels of Scout.com for this interview:

Michael Gilchrist mixtape: Best of 2010

Words.

After putting up 22 points and 7 rebounds to lead St. Patrick’s (NJ) to a convincing win over Austin Rivers and Winter Park (FL) on national TV on Friday night, Michael Gilchrist solidified his place as one of the top players in the country, and probably convinced some observers he deserves the No. 1 spot. It wouldn’t be the first time. Check out some of Gilchrist’s best work from the AAU season with Team Final.

For as long as they’re both in the NBA, whenever Kobe Bryant and LeBron James line up across from each other on the court, it’s never going to not be a nationally televised main event. In the NFL, Peyton Manning and Tom Brady can’t square off without the eyes of the entire nation watching. There’s just something about when the two best in their sport go head-to-head — even if it’s not really head-to-head — that makes it appointment viewing for anybody with a TV.

At 7 p.m. EST tonight on ESPN2, high school basketball’s Kobe-vs.-LeBron is going down, when Winter Park (FL) tips off against St. Patrick (NJ), showcasing the individual matchup of Austin Rivers vs. Michael Gilchrist. MORE >

Austin Rivers, J.P. Tokoto headline Brandon Jennings Invitational

At just 21 years old and midway through his second NBA season, Brandon Jennings might seem a little young to have an elite high school basketball showcase named after him. But when you consider Jennings was perhaps one of the greatest prep point guards to grace a gym during his stints at Dominguez H.S. (CA) and Oak Hill Academy (VA), it makes more sense.

Under Armour recently announced the lineup for the first annual Brandon Jennings Invitation, which will take place on Jan. 22 at Marquette University High School in Milwaukee. The eight-team field includes teams from Wisconsin, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, California and Maryland, and some of the top players in the country. MORE >

Xavier Johnson dunks on Austin Rivers

Words.

Last night’s nationally-televised consolation game at the City of Palms Classic was billed as yet another individual showcase for the nation’s No. 1 player, Winter Park (FL) guard Austin Rivers. But nobody told Mater Dei (CA) and specifically Xavier Johnson that they were supposed to be mere backdrop. Johnson, a junior wing, finished with 26 points and 12 boards in a convincing Mater Dei win, and Johnson put Rivers on the wrong end of a highlight.

Austin Rivers: Don’t dismiss Duke despite Irving’s injury

Words.

It’s not that Winter Park (Fla.) senior Austin Rivers doesn’t understand the general sentiment of those who want to hop off the Duke Blue Devils bandwagon now that its dynamic freshman point guard, Kyrie Irving is sidelined with a serious toe injury. Rivers just don’t believe that Duke is done without Irving.

Rivers, a Duke signee for the 2011 class, said that even if Irving is out for the season, Duke “has a legitimate chance to repeat as national champs.” MORE >
