Nearly two years ago when Jared Sullinger gave Ohio State head coach Thad Matta a verbal commitment naysayers said that Sullinger would ultimately back out.

Sure he’d grown up in Columbus, Ohio, and had a lifelong admiration for all things Buckeyes, but the quick and early commitments are always looked upon with major skepticism. But not only has Sullinger, a 6-8 forward from Northland High, remained firm with the Buckeyes, he’s also lived up to all of the hype he garnered as a freshman.

This past season, Sullinger, a rising senior who is rated the No. 3 prospect in the HighSchoolHoop top 50, averaged 19.9 points, 12.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists, while shooting 67 percent from the field and leading Northland (25-1) to its first state title.

Stats like that led to Sullinger being picked to represent the USA in the World Basketball Tournament in Douai, France, which runs from June 8-15.

“I’m just excited about playing with Jared,” said Joshua Hairston, a Duke commit who is teaming up with Sullinger in France. “We’re real good friends and he’s a great player. He’s a guy that you can learn a lot from.”
