Strawberry Mansion Wins At Buzzer!

The 3rd Annual VILLA Holiday Classic was held yesterday, January 3, 2010 at St. Joseph University’s Hagan Arena, noon-8:00pm. The Classic showcased the top 8 high school basketball teams out of Philadelphia and New York featuring Bishop Loughlin (Brooklyn, NY) Power Forward and top Villanova recruit Jayvaughn Pinkston, Strawberry Mansion Guards Khyree Wooten and D.J. Newbill, Girard College Guards Torrell Candelaria and University of Pittsburgh recruit, John Johnson; Friends’ Central Forward Amile Jefferson (Top 10 Nationally ranked Sophomore) and Guard Devin Coleman; Harrisburg’s Bryan Taylor; North Catholic Guard Mike Terry; and Phelp’s Damien Williams, Tyree Harris, and Jahmad Saleem.

Phelps guard Jahmad Saleem’s 3-pointer with 3:42 remaining tied the game at 46, but Friends’ Central answered with a four-point play.
FC’s Dominic Morris was fouled on a made layup, and Amile Jefferson converted the put-back on Morris’ missed free throw.

Highlights
Girard College star guard John Johnson made 15 of 22 foul shots. But he also committed a crucial foul on a shooter with 1/2 second remaining in overtime and his team leading, 74-73.
The shooter, Harrisburg senior guard Randy Fulp, made the first of two free throws to tie, then his second shot rimmed out to the right, where Harrisburg’s Jawon Chisholm leapt over Girard College forwards Dave Ware and Clifford White to tip-in the miss.
The game went to overtime when Bryan Taylor made one of two free throws to tie the game at 69, nullifying a terrific fourth quarter for Girard College’s Clifford White, who scored seven points in the final period, including 4 of 4 from the foul line, and also made 2 of 2 free throws
in overtime.

Highlights
The Lions of Brooklyn humbled the Public League’s Panthers, 57-23, behind 19 points from 6-foot-7 senior Villanova recruit Jayvaughn Pinkston, as Villanova Wildcats’ coach Jay Wright looked on. Imhotep Charter (4-1), last year’s Public League, District 12 and Class AA state champion, went into halftime down 34-17 and scored just two points in the third quarter. Panthers forward Earl Brown’s layup with one minute remaining in the quarter was all that prevented Imhotep from having a donut in its box score. “They’re a good team defensively, but I haven’t seen us play this poorly offensively in a long, long time,” said Imhotep coach Andre Noble.

In the best way to end the 3rd Annual VILLA Holiday Classic, Strawberry Mansion senior guard D.J. Newbill swished a three-pointer from the right wing with less than 3 seconds on the clock, downing North Catholic at the buzzer, 78-77.
